Fishing is very popular on the Outer Banks and many people love to hit up the Corolla area to stake out their own surf fishing spot. You will need to have a North Carolina fishing license, so make sure you have that before coming out to the Outer Banks for your first fishing trip. You can get your saltwater fishing license for only $15.00 per year, many fishing stores sell them as well as Walmart.

The state of North carolina has minimum sizes and daily limits on fish, you can get the details here.

Here are some popular fish that are often found around the Outer Banks areas:

Bluefish - limit of 15 per day per person, very common fish

Red Drum - you’d love to catch one of these big boys

Spanish Mackerel - watch out for the teeth on these guys, they love to bite your toes once you have them on shore or in your boat. Popular fishing from the surf

One of my favorite things to do at night at Corolla Light (after going out to the bars) is sitting in a lifeguard stand and checking out the stars. On a clear night, you can see many more stars at Corolla than you can in cities and in other places. It’s fun to bring a cooler and a friend up in the chair and just sit, stare, and talk. It’s completely dark out in front of you and without the usual beach sounds of kids and music, you’ll notice just how loud the ocean is. This will remind you just how powerful the ocean is, and that you’re always at its mercy whenever you go for a swim. No matter how invincible you think you are, the ocean has the power to humble you.

I’ve sat in the lifeguard stand at Corolla many nights and thought just how lucky I was to be able to sit there. It’s an experience worth trying and one I definitely recommend.

Two summers ago, I had the pleasure of being an activities intern at Corolla Light Resort. It was probably the best summer of my life in that I got to live, work and play at the beach with people whom I became great friends with. For those who aren’t familiar with Corolla Light, it is a 400-home community that is just south of the vehicle beach access that you can take to Corolla Beach.

The resort is a great vacation spot for families. It has oceanfront and soundside pools, basketball courts, tennis courts, a putt-putt course (with real grass), sportscenter and best of all- activities for all ages and interests. Some of the activities include:

Family volleyball

Sandcastle building competition

3-on-3 basketball tournament for all ages (including adults)

Home Run derby with whiffleball bat/ball

ping pong tournament

arts and crafts

And more. My favorite activity had to be Big Daddy Splash. Every wednesday, we’d get dads (and some mom’s) to sign up and compete in a splash competition that was announced over the microphone. With the whole pooldeck watching, dad’s would try to do the craziest cannonballs, bellyflops and backbusters. We’d have a few rounds and whoever got the loudest cheers from the crowd moved on, with the winner receiving a gift certificate to the Clubhouse cafe, which has some of the best crabcakes in the world.

Corolla Light was the recipient of the 2006 North Carolina Resort Community of the Year and 2006 Currituck County Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year. It is a great place to vacation, and it provided me with one of the best working experiences I’ll probably ever have in my life.

Food Lion Store 937
805 Ocean Trail Corolla NC 27927
Phone: (252)453-4544

Conveniently located right off Highway 12 just a few miles south of central Corolla, you’ve probably been to this place before. But for any newbies, pay attention as there aren’t many other places around to get supplies. Its great because in the summer this Food Lion is usually open until Midnight.

You can drive your 4 wheel drive vehicle on the beach. I’d suggest starting at around sunrise. That way you can make fresh tracks and avoid the crowds trying to access the beach. There are at least 200 wild horses roaming the area at/around Corolla Beach. If you’re lucky you might even see a few. Since they aren’t used to human contact they will come up to your vehicle, as if to say, “What is this strange object?” They’ll sniff around, kick some sand and be on their way, and you’ll be stunned you even saw the horses. There’s barely any other place on earth where you’ll find horses so calm and tame that they won’t immediately sprint away when they see you.

One of the classic landmarks of the Corolla area is the Whalehead Club.

The Whalehead Club was built in 1922 by Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Knight, both avid hunters and lovers of the outdoors. It is a mansion on a relatively desolate part of the Outer Banks and built at a cost of over $300,000 at the time. The house degraded in the last few decades but has been recently restored to all of its original glory. Tours are available on a daily basis in-season (roughly Easter through Thanksgiving).
