Corolla Horses

You can drive your 4 wheel drive vehicle on the beach. I’d suggest starting at around sunrise. That way you can make fresh tracks and avoid the crowds trying to access the beach. There are at least 200 wild horses roaming the area at/around Corolla Beach. If you’re lucky you might even see a few. Since they aren’t used to human contact they will come up to your vehicle, as if to say, “What is this strange object?” They’ll sniff around, kick some sand and be on their way, and you’ll be stunned  you even saw the horses. There’s barely any other place on earth where you’ll find horses so calm and tame that they won’t immediately sprint away when they see you.

  1. Actually the number of Wild Spanish Mustangs in the Carova area, north of Corolla is more like 100. If you really want to learn about the horses, take a tour with Back Country Outfitters, 252-453-0877. They can find the horses for you within the 16,000 acres and teach you so much more about their history among lots of other good information! We went Kayaking with them, too!
