Corolla Light Resort
Two summers ago, I had the pleasure of being an activities intern at Corolla Light Resort. It was probably the best summer of my life in that I got to live, work and play at the beach with people whom I became great friends with. For those who aren’t familiar with Corolla Light, it is a 400-home community that is just south of the vehicle beach access that you can take to Corolla Beach.
The resort is a great vacation spot for families. It has oceanfront and soundside pools, basketball courts, tennis courts, a putt-putt course (with real grass), sportscenter and best of all- activities for all ages and interests. Some of the activities include:
- Family volleyball
- Sandcastle building competition
- 3-on-3 basketball tournament for all ages (including adults)
- Home Run derby with whiffleball bat/ball
- ping pong tournament
- arts and crafts
And more. My favorite activity had to be Big Daddy Splash. Every wednesday, we’d get dads (and some mom’s) to sign up and compete in a splash competition that was announced over the microphone. With the whole pooldeck watching, dad’s would try to do the craziest cannonballs, bellyflops and backbusters. We’d have a few rounds and whoever got the loudest cheers from the crowd moved on, with the winner receiving a gift certificate to the Clubhouse cafe, which has some of the best crabcakes in the world.

Corolla Light was the recipient of the 2006 North Carolina Resort Community of the Year and 2006 Currituck County Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year. It is a great place to vacation, and it provided me with one of the best working experiences I’ll probably ever have in my life.
